    Study Notes

    Personnel Qualifications

    • Personnel performing the OD gage tube inspection procedure must be able to demonstrate competency.
    • They must be able to distinguish J2 letters at 12 inches on a Jaeger eye chart and have no color vision impairment.
    • Certification reassessment is verified every 5 years, and certification is revoked when employment is terminated.

    Safety

    • Only trained, qualified personnel shall perform the inspection, and interpretation shall be performed by the Inspector.
    • All inspection personnel shall wear appropriate PPE and comply with HSE requirements.
    • Measurement instruments shall be cared for, held, and handled properly as per instructions.

    Inspection Apparatus

    • Direct reading gage or go-no-go type gage is used to locate the area of OD reduction.
    • The typical OD Gage is a Go-No-Go tool that is used to locate reductions of the pipe outside diameter.
    • The pipe OD surface shall be free from scale or heavy coatings exceeding 0.010-inch thickness.

    Equipment Calibration

    • The OD gage calibration shall be verified at the applicable maximum and minimum OD values.
    • When using the setting rod to verify the calibration of the OD Gage, the deviation indication (pointer) shall be set at “0”.

    Procedure

    • The OD gage shall be dragged along the tube length while rotating the pipe and holding the gage perpendicular to the tube.
    • If the tube diameter is excessively worn or reduced, the OD gage can determine the smallest permissible size by reading the indication pointer.

    Reporting

    • OD Gage tube inspection shall be recorded in the drill pipe inspection report (CRC-FO-DPIR-XX) for each joint.
    • The inspection report shall highlight the OD wear which is OK, Reduced, or Increased with red character.
