Study Notes
What is Organic Chemistry?
- Organic chemistry plays a role in all aspects of our lives, from the clothing we wear to the pixels of our television and computer screens, to preservatives in food, and to the inks that color the pages of books.
- It provides the power to synthesize new drugs, engineer molecules, and understand biochemical processes like aging, neural functioning, and cardiac arrest.
- It can explain how to prolong and improve life.
Life and the Chemistry of Carbon Compounds
- Organic chemistry is the chemistry of compounds that contain the element carbon.
- Carbon compounds are central to the structure of living organisms and therefore to the existence of life on Earth.
- Carbon is important because it can form strong bonds to other carbon atoms to form rings and chains, and to elements such as hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur.
- These bond-forming properties allow carbon to be the basis for the huge diversity of compounds necessary for the emergence of living organisms.
Atomic Structure
- The compounds we encounter in chemistry are made up of elements combined in different proportions.
- Elements are made up of atoms, which consist of a dense, positively charged nucleus containing protons and neutrons, and a surrounding cloud of electrons.
Valence Electrons
- The valence shell is the outermost shell of an atom, and it is the electrons in this shell that are used in making chemical bonds with other atoms to form compounds.
- The number of electrons in the valence shell (called valence electrons) is equal to the group number of the atom.
- For example, carbon has four valence electrons, oxygen has six valence electrons, and the halogens of group VIIA have seven electrons.
Importance of Carbon
- Carbon is the element that nature has chosen for living organisms.
- Carbon compounds are essential for the day-to-day functioning of organisms and/or their survival against predators.
- Organic molecules, comprised almost exclusively of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen, aid in the functioning of organisms and their survival.
