Study Notes
Soft Palate
- The soft palate's epithelium is non-keratinized and continuous with the hard palate's epithelium
- A line, known as the "healthy" or "Ah" line, separates the hard and soft palate
- The lamina propria is separated from the submucosa by a continuous layer of elastic fibers, allowing for mobility
Mucous Membrane
- Non-keratinized mucosa is found in the soft palate, tongue, buccal mucosa, floor of the mouth, and inferior surface of the tongue
- The submucosa contains fat cells and mucous glands
Lip
- The lip consists of a mucous membrane side and a skin side
- The mucous membrane side has a vermilion zone and a non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
- The skin side has sebaceous glands and hair follicles
- Mixed glands are present in the lip, including salivary glands
- A vermilion border separates the mucous membrane side from the skin side
