    • Demonstrate the delivery of appropriate Oral Hygiene advice, including tooth brushing and interdental cleaning techniques
    • Tailor techniques and advice to adapt to diverse patients' needs

    Outline

    • Session 1: Overview of why oral hygiene coaching is crucial in their role, review available products, usage, and advice for patients.
    • Session 2: Practical session involving case studies to adapt approaches.

    Assessment

    • Formative: Demonstrations in activities
    • Summative: Year 1 OSCE, Year 1, 2, and 3 clinical placements
    • Future career: Effectiveness as a dental hygienist and therapist.

    Why?

    • Emphasizes the direct role of dental biofilm in dental caries and periodontal disease, increasing the risk of both.
    • Effective and regular removal of biofilm is critical for preventing these diseases.

    Steps in a Preventative Program

    • Purpose: Enable patients to effectively remove plaque through self-care to prevent and reduce oral disease risk.
    • Steps:
      • Gather all information (e.g., referral, previous treatment, patient perception, medical history, radiographic evidence)
      • Gather new information (e.g., identify presence/severity of disease, and risk factors, baseline charting: BPE, 6PPC, BS%)
      • Provide coaching for self-care (e.g., identify current routines, techniques, correct any issues, build motivation, assess readiness, select appropriate measures).
      • Evaluate changes in oral health (e.g., patient feedback, assessing condition improvement, setting new goals, review dates and discussing treatment progression).

    Tooth Brushing

    • Manual vs Electric brushes: Both effective with appropriate usage; adapt to patient's needs (Grender et al 2020).

    Interdental Cleaning

    • Various tools like floss, interdental brushes, and super floss are discussed.

    Flossing

    • Used interdentally, place subgingivally as possible. 1x daily with wrapped floss through the contact point and down between tooth and gums, and correct any issues noticed.

    Superfloss

    • Single units, used under bridges, around implants, and orthodontic appliances. Push stiffened end through, typically from the buccal side when needed.

    Interdental Brushes

    • Used interdentally, sizing, 1x daily use in all gaps, with correct placement and avoiding gum tissue trauma.

    Single Tufted Brush

    • Very versatile, used around implants, distal teeth, and Orthodontic appliances, single standing teeth, inclined teeth, and with tooth recession, getting into pockets that are needed.

    How not to floss

    • Demonstrates incorrect flossing technique

    Other devices patients might use

    • Examples: tongue scrapers, water flossers

    Removable Retainers & Appliances

    • Need to be kept clean to avoid bacterial and food buildup.

    How To Do It:

    • Appliance cleaning methods (soft toothbrushes, denture brushes, and cleaning tablets)
    • Avoiding toothpaste for cleaning appliance, emphasizing care for soft tissues.

    When to adapt advice?

    • The need to adapt methods for children, adjust for patients with additional needs (e.g., cognitive disorders or physical impairments), co-morbidities, and involvement of carers.

    Summary

    • Importance of oral hygiene coaching.
    • Steps in a preventative program.
    • Demonstrating different cleaning methods and tools.
    • Adapting techniques to meet patients' specific needs.
