Study Notes

I

ntroduction

  • This document reports on a study conducted by the Global Business School & Research Centre (GBSRC) at Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University), Pune, for the Collectives for Integrated Livelihood Initiatives (CInI).
  • The study aims to improve primary and preventive care for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in Jharkhand, with a focus on cancer and menstrual hygiene management.

Acknowledgement

  • The study acknowledges the burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and the potential impact on women's work participation and health outcomes in Jharkhand.
  • GBSRC is grateful for the task assigned by CInI to understand the demand and supply side analysis of services for NCDs, menstrual hygiene, cervical cancer, and breast cancer in Jharkhand.
  • The study collected data from more than 210 households in 4 districts.

Methodology

  • The study employs a case-control study design, comparing 3 blocks in interventional areas with 3 blocks in non-interventional areas within the same district.
  • The sample size for the study was calculated to be 200, with 100 participants from each interventional and non-interventional block.
  • Data was collected using structured questionnaires (household, menstrual hygiene, breast & cervical cancer) for each participant.

Burden of NCD and Cancer in Study Population

  • Jharkhand has a higher prevalence of hypertension (25.3%) and diabetes (8.6%) than the national average.
  • National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) data shows elevated rates of breast cancer, cervical cancer, oral cancer, and lung cancer in the region.
  • The screening rate for cancer in Jharkhand is comparatively lower (0.5% for cervical, 0.1% for breast, 0.2% for oral cancer among women) compared to the national average.

Health Seeking Behaviour for Different Health Conditions

  • Demand for chronic healthcare services differs from acute due to awareness and attitudes of the population.
  • Challenges in health-seeking behavior in Jharkhand include varying awareness levels, accessibility to facilities, distances to centers, socioeconomic factors, and cultural stigma.
  • The findings provide insight into factors influencing health-seeking behavior for NCDs like Diabetes and Hypertension and potentially other conditions.
  • Overall demand for healthcare services in a certain time period was 44% in the study population.
