Explain the use of the Perkins tonometer and its relation to drug application for tonometry.

The Perkins tonometer is a portable tonometer used to measure intraocular pressure. It is often used with proxymetacaine for its least stinging effect. Tetracaine and oxybuprocaine sting more, and lidocaine (amide) is used for individuals allergic to ester. When performing tonometry on a patient with blepharospasm, the lids should be held without applying pressure on the globe to avoid elevated readings.

What should be done in the case of excess or insufficient tears during tonometry?

In the case of excess or insufficient tears, the probe should be cleaned and the patient should be asked to dab their eye. If mires are not touching the cornea, the probe should be moved down. If positioned too low, it should be moved up, and if mires are too small, then a larger mire should be used.

What is the significance of creating a tear meniscus during tonometry?

When applanating, a tear meniscus is created around the outside of the probe, and mires are created by a prism that splits the upper and lower part of the tear meniscus into two halves. If the rings are off to one side, the probe should be moved towards the rings.

What are the different types of tonometers mentioned in the text?

Perkins tonometer

What is the procedure for irrigating the eye during tonometry?

Irrigating the eye during tonometry involves cleaning the eye with water or saline.

What is the recommended alternative drug for tonometry if the patient is allergic to Easter?

lidocaine (amide)

What should be done if there is excess or insufficient tears during tonometry?

clean probe and have the patient dab the eye

What is the recommended drug for tonometry that stings the least?

proxymetacaine

What is the purpose of adding fluorescein during the procedure?

To help visualize tears on the eyes

What should be checked before using any drug during tonometry?

Drug, dose, date, and disposal

What should the patient be informed about before putting a drop in their eye?

It will sting a little and numb the eye

Where should the goldmann be placed during the setup for tonometry?

On the right because the practitioner is right eye dominant

What should the patient do when the drop is put in their eye?

Close the eye

What should be checked with white light before adding fluorescein during the eye procedure?

Corneal section

What should be monitored over time if excess staining is found during the eye procedure?

Corneal melt or desquamation

What should be checked before using a drug for tonometry?

Drug, dose, date, and disposal

What should the patient be informed about before putting a drop in their eye during tonometry?

It will numb the eye

Why is the Goldmann tonometer placed on the right side for a right eye dominant individual?

To maintain consistent procedure
