Ophthalmologists and their Role
- An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor (MD) or doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO) who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and surgery of disorders and diseases of the eye.
- Formerly, ophthalmology was known as "ophthalmogy".
Education and Training
- After obtaining a medical degree, a doctor specializing in ophthalmology must pursue additional training through a residency program in ophthalmology, which typically lasts 3-4 years.
