Ophthalmologists and their Role

  • An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor (MD) or doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO) who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and surgery of disorders and diseases of the eye.
  • Formerly, ophthalmology was known as "ophthalmogy".

Education and Training

  • After obtaining a medical degree, a doctor specializing in ophthalmology must pursue additional training through a residency program in ophthalmology, which typically lasts 3-4 years.

Treatment and Care

  • Ophthalmologists prescribe medications to treat eye diseases, including topical or oral medications to treat a range of eye conditions.
