Study Notes

Operations with Signed Numbers

  • Addition of positive integers: Adding positive integers results in a larger positive integer.
  • Subtraction of positive integers: Subtracting a positive integer from a larger positive integer results in a positive integer. If subtracting a larger positive integer from a smaller, the result is a negative integer.
  • Multiplication of positive integers: Multiplying positive integers results in a positive integer.
  • Multiplication of negative integers: Multiplying negative integers results in a positive integer.
  • Multiplication of positive and negative integers: Multiplying a positive and a negative integer results in a negative integer.
  • Division of positive integers: Dividing positive integers results in a positive integer if the divisor is a factor of the dividend.
  • Division of negative integers: Dividing negative integers results in a positive integer.
  • Division of positive and negative integers: Dividing a positive integer by a negative integer or a negative integer by a positive integer results in a negative integer.

Simplifying Numerical Expressions

  • Order of Operations (PEMDAS/BODMAS): Follow the order of operations, performing calculations inside parentheses or brackets first, then exponents, then multiplication and division (from left to right), and finally addition and subtraction (from left to right).
  • Whole Numbers: Use whole numbers from 0 to 999 or greater in the problem.
  • Basic Arithmetic Operations: Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are the operations used.
  • Positive Whole Number Solutions: The result of the simplified numerical expression must be a positive whole number.
  • Expressions with Brackets: Expressions within brackets must be evaluated first, according to the order of operations.
  • Numbers: Numerical expressions involve numbers no more than three digits.
