Flashcards

Adding signed numbers with the same sign

When adding two numbers with the same sign (both positive or both negative), add their absolute values and keep the same sign.

Adding signed numbers with different signs

When adding two numbers with different signs (one positive, one negative), find the difference between their absolute values and give the sign of the number with the larger absolute value.

Subtracting Signed Numbers

To subtract a signed number, add its opposite. The opposite of a positive number is negative, and the opposite of a negative number is positive.

Order of operations (PEMDAS)

Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division (from left to right), Addition and Subtraction (from left to right).

Study Notes

Signed Number Calculations

  • Calculate expressions using the best method for addition and subtraction of signed numbers.
  • Follow the rules for adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers
  • Combine like terms (positive with positive, negative with negative)

Ordering Numbers

  • Calculate the values of E, F, and G.
  • E = (-5.2) + (-7.1) = -12.3
  • F = (-4.1) - (-6.5) + (-5.2) = 2.4 - 5.2 = -2.8
  • G = (11.1) - (19.2) = -8.1
  • Arrange the values E, F, and G in decreasing order: 11.1, -4.1, -5.2
  • Important: Follow the proper order of operations to calculate the values.

Numerical Expressions

  • Calculate the following numerical expressions using the correct order of operations.
  • Show your work to receive full credit.
  • Simplify and solve each problem by step-by-step calculation.
  • Consider parentheses first in each expression.
