Operating Systems Unit I: Structure and Components

The goals of an operating system are: to execute user programs and make solving user problems easier, to make the computer system convenient to use, and to use the computer hardware in an efficient manner.

The four components of a computer system are: hardware (providing basic computing resources such as CPU, memory, and I/O devices), operating system (controlling and coordinating the use of hardware among various applications and users), application programs (defining the ways in which system resources are used to solve computing problems), and users (people, machines, and other computers).

Examples of application programs mentioned in the text include word processors, compilers, web browsers, database systems, and video games.
