Omaha Police Department Mental Health Policy
- Omaha Police Department (OPD) mandates annual mental health check-ins for designated employees.
- Designated employees include captains in specific sections (Criminal Investigations, Special Investigations, and Tactical Operations), officers, sergeants, and lieutenants in specific units (Homicide, Child Special Victims, Adult Special Victims, Crash Investigation), and other employees designated by the Employee Resources Squad.
- Forensic Investigations Unit employees assisting the designated units can choose to attend annually.
- Check-ins are mandatory for those deemed designated employees.
Procedure and Scheduling
- Employees schedule one-hour appointments with a licensed therapist through the First Responders Foundation (FRF).
- Appointments are scheduled between 0800 and 1700, Monday through Friday.
- Appointments must be scheduled within 30 days of the employee's birthday, or within 60 days of policy effective date for past birthdays in 2023. Appointments for birthdays in 2024 after August 31, 2024, should be scheduled before that date.
- Appointments are scheduled during regular work hours and are compensated.
- Employees need to notify the provider of any appointment cancellations.
- Privacy, consent, and release forms are emailed, requiring electronic signature before appointments.
Confidentiality and Reporting
- Therapist reports only attendance to the department.
- Content of the check-ins remains confidential, except in cases of potential danger to self or others, or child/elderly/disabled abuse.
- Employees should contact Employee Resources Sergeant if any concerns arise during a check-in.

Costs and Treatment
- Initial mental health check-ins are provided by the department.
