Al-Busaidi Dynasty
- The Al-Busaidi tribe descends from Al-Azd, the ancient father of Arab tribes in the Arabian Peninsula, and is one of the Arab Qahtani tribes.
- The tribe inhabited Yemen before migrating to other parts of the world after the collapse of the Marib Dam.
Imamate System and its End
- The Imamate system ended with the Yarubids State, and the Sultanate system was applied with the beginning of the Al-Busaidi State.
Ahmed bin Said Al Busaidi
- Ahmed bin Said Al Busaidi was elected as the Imam of Oman in 1744 AD due to his good reputation, strength, and role in facing invaders.
- He was the first ruler and founder of the Al-Busaidi Dynasty.
- He reunited Oman, which was dividing due to civil war, and large parts of the country were occupied by Persians.
- His reign lasted from 1744 to 1783 AD.
- Achievements:
- Reunited Oman and drove the Persians out of the country.
- Built a naval and commercial fleet, strengthening Oman's position in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf.
- Extended Oman's territory to East Africa, which was previously controlled by the Yarubids State.
Death of Imam Ahmed
- Imam Ahmed bin Said Al Busaidi lived in Rustaq and died on 15th December, 1783 AD.
- He was buried in Rustaq Fort.
- His fourth son, Said bin Ahmed, was elected as the next Imam.
Sultan Said bin Sultan Al Busaidi
- Sultan Said bin Sultan Al Busaidi was the fifth and greatest ruler of the Al-Busaidi Dynasty.
- His reign lasted from 1804 to 1856 AD (52 years).
- He took power at the age of 17 and was a powerful and ambitious leader.
- Achievements:
- Built a significant Empire that extended from Oman to East Africa (Zanzibar and surroundings).
- Joint Zanzibar to Oman, making them a united country, and became known as the Sultan of Oman and Zanzibar.
- Introduced cloves to Zanzibar for the first time in 1818 AD, making it the main source of wealth in the area and the first worldwide exporter of cloves.
Death of Sultan Said
- Sultan Said bin Sultan Al Busaidi died on 19 October, 1856 AD during his sailing from Muscat to Zanzibar.
- After his death, his third son Thuwaini became Sultan of Muscat and Oman, and his sixth son Majid became Sultan of Zanzibar.
