Omaha Police Department (OPD) Mental Health Warrant Procedures
- OPD coordinates with Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) for mental health warrants.
- Procedures apply only to cases with an issued warrant, not other admissions (voluntary/involuntary).
- If a citizen suspects a person is mentally ill and dangerous, they should contact the County Attorney for a warrant.
- DCSO handles warrant service and maintains a file with the receiving medical facility.
- DCSO records warrant information on mainframe systems.
- OPD officers can check for outstanding mental health warrants.
- OPD officers will coordinate with the DCSO Fugitive Warrant Division between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM, Monday to Friday (excluding holidays).
- Out of these hours, the DCSO Communications Division is the contact point.
Warrant Verification and Transport
- If a warrant is possible, the Information Operator will notify involved OPD officers with "Possible A-Adam, A-Adam Signal 3 on file."
- The Information Operator will confirm the warrant with DCSO and provide the receiving medical facility.
- Officers should wait for the facility name before transportation.
- Officers will transport the person to the designated medical facility.
- Notifications to supervisors relevant to facility location outside the officer's area are required.
Transporting a Female Detainee
- When transporting a female on a mental health warrant, an adult female, a family member, or a female officer must accompany her, per NRS §71-928.
- The accompanying person's information is required by the medical facility.
DCSO Support
- DCSO dispatches personnel to meet officers at the facility with the warrant.
- The medical facility will refuse admittance without the warrant paperwork.
