OHE Maintenance Depots Overview

Maintenance depots should be situated near major railway yards for quick staff response to breakdowns.

Depot beat should ideally be limited to four block sections to ensure quick response to breakdowns.

Depots should have readily available educational and medical facilities for staff retention.

Major depots include a tower wagon, shed, and workshop; minor depots don't have these, focusing on basic tools for maintenance.

OHE maintenance depots need basic tools like a drilling machine and bench grinder for regular maintenance.

Secondary activities like smithy, carpentry, and welding can be located centrally at divisional headquarters or a depot for convenience but do not have to be at every depot.

PSI maintenance depots should be located at stations with traction sub-stations, whenever feasible, as PSI maintenance is more concentrated there.

The distance between OHE maintenance depots is typically based on the equipped track kilometers (EETKMs) they maintain. A single depot generally handles at least 150 track kilometers, which translates to 250-300 EETKMs. This leads to a spacing of about 60 RKMs (Route Kilometers) on a double-track section.

When choosing the location for an OHE maintenance depot, several factors are considered, including: the total track length it will maintain, the traffic density on the section, the proximity of major yards, and the availability of essential facilities like education and healthcare.

The number of staff required for OHE maintenance is determined by the amount of work needed, not by the number of depots. Staff is allocated based on the maintenance schedules and yardsticks for different equipment.

If a single depot covers too much track, it can become difficult to manage. To avoid this, a minimum of 150 track kilometers (250-300 EETKMs) is assigned to each depot.

When a depot is located near a major terminal or yard, the spacing between depots might be reduced, since the terminal needs dedicated maintenance as well.

The total staff for OHE maintenance is allocated to depots based on the amount of work each section requires, considering maintenance schedules and equipment needs.

The size of an OHE depot is not directly determined by the staff but by the amount of track kilometers it needs to maintain. This is to ensure that the installations are manageable and the depot can effectively serve the section's needs.
