Study Notes
Ocular Anatomy Overview
- Ocular anatomy is the comprehensive study of the eye's structure and associated tissues, crucial for understanding vision.
- Knowledge of ocular anatomy is vital for diagnosing eye diseases and developing effective treatments.
- The eye comprises various components (cornea, lens, retina, optic nerve), each with a role in the visual process.
Eye Function
- The eye acts as a complex organ, capturing light, focusing it, and converting it into signals processed by the brain.
- This facilitates the perception of the world.
- Understanding ocular anatomy provides a deeper understanding of how vision works and potential impairments.
Eye Structure: Introduction
- The eye is the organ of vision, enabling us to see shapes, colours, and sizes of objects.
- We use our eyes in numerous daily activities (reading, writing, or watching television).
Anatomy of the Eye (Looking at Eyes)
- Cornea: Transparent outer layer of the eye.
- Conjunctiva: Thin, clear membrane covering the sclera.
- Limbus: Boundary between the cornea and conjunctiva.
- Pupil: Dark opening in the center of the iris.
- Iris: Coloured part of the eye; controls pupil size.
- Sclera: White outer layer of the eye providing structural support.
- Upper/Lower Eyelids: Protective coverings for the eye.
- Punctum: Small opening where tears drain.
Eye Structure (Cutting the Eye in Half)
- Eyeball: Approximately 25mm in diameter.
- Structure Components: Cornea, lens, aqueous humor, iris, ciliary muscle, sclera, choroid, retina, optic nerve, vitreous humor.
- The eye is a hollow ball filled with transparent gel.
Eye Structures (Ocular Adnexa/Accessory Structures)
- Orbits: Bony sockets in the skull, protecting the eye. (four-sided pyramid shaped)
- Eyelids and Eyelashes: Provide protection from foreign bodies, sweat, and sun rays.
- Conjunctiva: Lubricating mucous membrane between the eyelid and sclera
- Lacrimal System: Produces and drains tears.
Eyelids
- Skin, muscles (orbicularis oculi, levator palpebrae superioris), glands (meibomian glands) and conjunctiva.
- Provides protection.
- Offer mechanical protection to anterior portions of the eye.
- Maintain the correct position of the globe within the orbital contents.
- Spread the tear film across the conjunctiva and cornea during blinking.
- Contain the Meibomian glands for tear film lipid component.
- Prevent drying of the eye (puncta).
- Regulate light entry.
- Protect from airborne particles, protect from sun rays.
- Blinking Function for Spreading and Renewal of Tears
- Blinking spreads tears over the eye's surface and renews the tear film, preventing the eye from drying. Blinks occur approximately 12 times per minute, and the eye is shut for approximately 0.3 seconds each time.
Tear Film
- The tear film is a watery layer at the front of the eye essential for several functions.
- Keeps the outside of the eye wet
- Provides nutrients to the cornea
- Creates a smooth surface for light to pass through the cornea
- Provides protection from infection
Tears - Types
- Basal Tears: Daily moistening of the eye.
- Irritant/Reflex Tears: Response to pain or foreign bodies, similar composition to basal tears but more healing properties.
- Emotional Tears: Response to emotions (sadness, stress, joy).
Lacrimal Apparatus
- Lacrimal Gland: Produces tears.
- Lacrimal Canals: Drains tears from the eye.
- Lacrimal Sac: Collects tears.
- Nasolacrimal Duct: Empties tears into the nasal cavity.
- Flow of Tears: Gland to canals to sac, to duct to nasal cavity
