Study Notes
California Current
- Cold water from high latitudes flows southward along the coast of North America, from British Columbia to Baja California
- This movement, coupled with winds blowing from land to sea, pushes surface waters away from the coast.
- This creates an area where cooler, nutrient-rich water rises from the depths (upwelling).
- The upwelling process makes these waters highly productive, supporting diverse marine life.
- Warm ocean currents warm coastal air, resulting in humid climates.
- Cool currents cool coastal air, creating dry climates.
Gulf Stream
- A significant western boundary current, transporting warm tropical water northward along the U.S. East Coast.
- Its path includes meandering and looping.
- It merges with the Sargasso Sea, contributing to water circulation in the North Atlantic Gyre.
- The North Atlantic Gyre circulates around the center of the North Atlantic Ocean.
- The Sargasso Sea is recognized by its unique biological community (like Sargassum seaweed as well as turtles, fish, invertebrates, and whales) and unique characteristics.
- Meanders (loops) can form warm-core and cold-core rings, trapping warmer or colder waters within loops of the currents.
Loop Current
- A warm ocean surface current in the Gulf of Mexico.
- The current generates warm loop current eddies.
- Hurricanes can intensify when passing over warm loop current eddies.
Upwelling and Downwelling
- Upwelling is the vertical movement of cold, nutrient-rich water to the surface that leads to higher marine productivity.
- Downwelling is the vertical movement of surface water to deeper ocean levels, resulting in lower productivity but vital for transporting oxygen to deep-sea organisms.
- Wind plays a significant role in both vertical and horizontal movement of water masses.
