Study Notes
Caput Succedaneum
- Swelling of the scalp at the presenting part of the head
Cardinal Movements of Labor
- Position changes to keep the smallest diameter of the fetal head (in cephalic presentations) always presenting to the smallest diameter of the birth canal. This includes:
- Descent
- Flexion
- Internal Rotation
- Extension
- External Rotation
- Expulsion
Amnioinfusion
- Enlarging the amount of amniotic fluid by administration of normal saline or lactated Ringer’s solution intravaginally into the uterus
Afterpains
- Intermittent cramping due to uterine contraction during involution in the postpartum period.
Amniotic Cavity
- The space in the developing conceptus from which the ectodermal cells develop.
Amniotic Fluid Embolism
- A condition in which amniotic fluid is forced into maternal circulation and travels to the lungs as small emboli.
Amniotic Membrane
- The innermost membrane surrounding the fetus; it secretes amniotic fluid.
