Study Notes
- The multimedia design process involves learning the process and demonstrating design research skills.
Design Process
- A design process is an approach to break down a large project into manageable parts.
- Architects, engineers, scientists et al use it for problem solving.
- Describes all the stages of a project, which is broken down into 4 sub-processes (definition, creation, feedback, and delivery) and consists of 9 single steps.
- Useful for all project designs.
Design Process Phases
- Definition Phase includes the following steps:
- Creative brief
- Design research
- Mood boarding
- Creation Phase includes:
- Sketching
- Design Building
- Refining process
- Feedback Phase includes
- Presentation
- Revisions
- Delivery Phase comprises:
- Final Delivery
Creative Brief
- The first step involves a designer learning the client's needs.
- Gathers as much information on the client, their company, and project expectations.
- A brief should contain the following 10 things:
- Background information- What business is the client in?
- Unique selling proposition (USP)- What makes the client's service or product special?
- Objectives- What are the project goals? How is it a success?
- Target audience- Who are the client's customers?
- Position and major competitors- Where is the client positioned compared to competitors?
- Deliverables- What should you deliver?
- Tone of voice- What is the brand's personality?
- Likes and dislikes- Are there examples of things that the client enjoys and dislikes?
- Budget- What is the client willing to invest?
- Timeline/Milestones- When is the deadline and what are the milestones?
Design Research
- The art of watching what people do and perceiving what they think and feel.
- Unlike market research, it finds stories, understands motivations, uncovers moments and unmet needs, and having curiosity about how others see the world.
- There are two approaches to development when dealing with a brief: linear or lateral thinking
- Linear Reasoning
- Lateral Thinking
Linear Reasoning
- Follows step by step logic.
- A strategic process that is useful when there is a predetermined idea.
- The concept is split into smaller components and these are dealt with on their own.
Lateral Thinking
- Involves exploration by generating less obvious associations.
- Emphasizes random, creative research - brainstorming is a good example.
Mood Boarding
- A mood board is a visual tool that uses text, images and materials to visually represent information to communicate concepts and ideas.
- Used to create visuals on a style or concept.
Sketching
- A distinctive form of drawing used to propose, explore, refine and communicate ideas.
Thematic Variation
- Design and sketches are associated in recordings.
- The variations are influenced by researched ideas, to images, and the typeface selector.
Abstraction
- Concept involving something that is distilled to its barest minimum form, color, or tone.
- Drawn from reality, but often taken out of its original context.
Design Production Process
- After creating the initial sketch and presenting it, a designer can collect these ideas and work on the final designs through different variations.
Refining Process
- Revise and process client requests to meet target outcomes for the design.
- Consider suggestions from the clients, but refer back to the design research and creative brief.
Presentation
- Give the formal presentation of the design after the revisions have been made.
- Intended to tell a story; the artist must be willing to listen to the client's feedback.
Revisions and Approval
- Includes revisions and feedback. It is important to understand requests and acknowledge what is/is not acceptable in consideration of ethics and design.
Final Delivery
- This step refers to the turnover process from which the finalized design will be handed-over or endorsed to the client.
