Leaves of Absence Policy for NYC Department Employees
- Employees are authorized leaves of absence with pay for specific reasons such as death in the immediate family, jury duty, court appearances, Department of Health quarantine, civil service examinations, and more.
- Absences for jury duty and court appearances require the employee to provide evidence to their Commanding Officer and follow specific guidelines.
- In cases of serious illness in the immediate family or exceptional circumstances, the Commanding Officer may grant leave chargeable against the employee's personal leave day, compensatory time, or annual leave balance.
- Leaves of absence with pay, not exceeding three months, are granted to physically disabled employees not covered by Worker's Compensation, upon receipt of a waiver of damages against the city.
- Maternity leave and child care leave for civilian employees are governed by the collective bargaining agreement, while family and medical leave for eligible employees is covered under the Family Medical Leave Act.
- Leaves of absence without pay not to exceed one year for other reasons may be granted to permanent employees by the Commissioner, with a possible extension up to two years by the Mayor.
