Nursing Role in Patient Education
- The purpose of health teaching is to provide clients and families with knowledge and life skills to make good decisions, prevent mortality, and promote the highest possible quality of life.
- Nurses teach a variety of things to their clients, including health restoration, coping with impaired functioning, maintaining and promoting health, and preventing illness.
- The role of the nurse in patient education involves creating and adapting the environment to facilitate learning, assessing the learning needs of the patient, and using the most appropriate educational strategy.
- Client-centered education aims to engage clients as active participants in the learning process and ensure that health teaching interventions are supportive of the client’s preferences and values.
- Facilitating client-centered learning is based on the foundation of four pillars: client-centered care, promoting health literacy, building knowledge and skills, and supporting self-management strategies.
- Nurses act as guides, information providers, resource support, and knowledgeable emotional support in health teaching.
- The Transtheoretical Model of Change is used to explore a person’s motivational readiness to intentionally change health habits, including stages of change such as pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance.
- Learning domains are interrelated and include cognitive (understanding the content), affective (changing attitudes and promoting acceptance), and psychomotor (hands-on skills development).
- Visual, auditory, and kinetic are different learning styles, and factors affecting a client’s readiness and ability to learn include level of anxiety, ability to learn, physical capability, level of social support, health literacy, developmental stage, culture, self-awareness, and social determinants of health.
- Culture influences learning by influencing learning styles and health literacy, and nurses integrate the culture of their clients into the teaching/learning process.
- Comparison of the nursing process, Tanner’s Clinical Judgement Model, and the teaching processes involves assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
- Health literacy is defined as the ability to use printed and written information in society to achieve one’s goals and develop one’s knowledge and potential.
