RN Responsibilities
- Responsible for assessment and teaching patients
- Reinforces expected symptoms
- Calls family members about patient status
- Administers IV medications (only RNs can handle blood and verify type)
- Remains with patient during first 15 minutes of blood transfusions
LVN/PN Responsibilities
- Provides stable patient outcomes
- Titrates oxygen based on unit protocols
- Administers oxygen via nasal cannula
- Performs ostomy care (may give medications but no IV meds)
- Reinforces teaching already given by RN
- Administers tube feeds
- Performs NG tube insertions
- Performs suctioning
CNA/UAP Responsibilities
- Follows given standard procedures
- Measures urine output
- Collects non-sterile specimens (cannot obtain specimen from Foley catheter)
- Changes colostomy bags for patients with established stomas
- Removes Foley catheters
- Checks blood glucose levels
- Provides ADLs
