Study Notes

Characteristics of Anemia

  • The main characteristic of anemia is a decrease in the number of red blood cells or the amount of hemoglobin in the blood.

Types of Anemia

  • Hypoplastic anemia is caused by inadequate production of erythrocytes in the bone marrow.
  • Hemolytic anemia is caused by the premature destruction of erythrocytes, which can be caused by factors such as infections, autoimmune disorders, or certain medications.
  • One inherited cause of hemolytic anemia is sickle cell disease.

Hemolytic Anemia

  • As a result of premature destruction of erythrocytes in hemolytic anemia, the bone marrow cannot produce new cells quickly enough to replace the old ones.
  • Hemolysis can result from conditions such as malaria, blood transfusion reactions, or certain medications.
  • One common symptom of immune hemolytic anemias is jaundice.

Anemia Diagnosis

  • A Hemoglobin assessment finding of 13.5-17.5 g/dL is within the normal range.
  • The best evaluation for diagnosing blood diseases is a complete blood count (CBC).

Iron Deficiency Anemia

  • Iron deficiency anemia can be caused by conditions such as chronic bleeding, poor diet, or malabsorption.
  • A clinical manifestation of iron deficiency anemia is weakness.
  • Anemia is considered life-threatening at a Hemoglobin level of less than 7 g/dL.
  • Vitamin C is recommended to take with iron for better absorption.
  • Untreated pernicious anemia can lead to neurological problems.

Anemia Classification

  • 'Grade 3' anemia is classified as severe anemia.
  • The most common type of anemia is iron deficiency anemia.
