Number the Stars is a novel written by Lois Lowry, first published in 1989. It tells the story of two sisters, Annemarie Johansen and her younger sister Kirsti, who live in Copenhagen during World War II. Main Characters Introduction

The main character, Annemarie Johansen, is a 10-year-old Danish girl who lives with her family in Copenhagen. She is described as caring, responsible, and intelligent. In the opening scene, we learn that her parents have left to work in the countryside due to food rations and she is now living with her grandmother. Despite this change, Annemarie takes charge of the household, managing the chores and looking after her younger sister Kirsti. Her character development throughout the book shows how she matures rapidly, taking on more responsibilities than what would normally be expected from someone her age.

Annemarie's best friend Ellen has a Jewish father, whom they affectionately call 'Papa'. He is one of the kindest people in their neighborhood. When rumors start circulating about German soldiers arriving in Denmark, Annemarie begins to worry about what will happen to him.

Kirsti Johansen is Annemarie's younger sister who looks up to her. She is a curious child, often getting into trouble for asking too many questions. Despite this, Kirsti is well-loved by everyone and she idolizes her older sister.

The novel also introduces us to Lise, the Hansen family's lodger, an unmarried woman in her mid-thirties. Her relationship with Annemarie is initially cold but warms over time. Throughout the book, we learn more about Lise's past and why she had to leave home just before World War II broke out.
