Sudan: An Overview

Sudan, located at the crossroads of Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, is a country with a rich history and diverse culture. Bordered by seven nations, including Libya, Egypt, Chad, the Central African Republic, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Eritrea, Sudan is home to a variety of landscapes, from the Nile valleys and the Gezira region to the desert regions in the north.

Culture

Sudanese culture is a blend of African, Arab, and Islamic influences. The country has over 50 ethnic groups and over 400 traditional languages. Some of the most prominent ethnic groups include the Fur, Zaghawa, and Masalit in Darfur, the Dinka, Nuer, and Shilluk in South Sudan, and the Beja in the eastern region.

History

Sudan's history is marked by a series of conflicts, including civil wars and conflicts in Darfur, South Kordofan, and Blue Nile. In 2005, the Comprehensive Peace Agreement led to the secession of South Sudan, which was a major economic shock for Sudan. The country has faced significant internal conflict throughout its independent history, which has weakened its ability to play a leadership role in the region.

Geography

Sudan's geography is diverse, ranging from the desert in the north to fertile land in the Nile valleys and the Gezira region. The White and Blue Niles meet in Khartoum, the capital, and the Nile River continues to flow all the way to the Mediterranean via Egypt.

Economy

Sudan's economy has been affected by the conflict and the loss of oil revenue, which had accounted for more than half of the Sudan government’s revenue and 95% of its exports. The country has faced double-digit consumer price inflation and violent protests due to the economic shocks.

Politics

Sudan's politics have been marked by a series of power struggles and conflicts. The country has experienced a military takeover in 2021, which suspended the terms of the 2019 constitutional charter. Efforts to relaunch the country's transition to civilian government and hold elections have been ongoing, but a political deadlock has prevailed between domestic stakeholders.

Current Situation

As of March 2024, Sudan faces one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, with over 8 million people displaced and over 17.7 million people in acute food insecurity. The conflict has intensified pre-existing challenges, including acute shortages of food, water, medicines, and fuel, limited or no access to healthcare services, and escalating food insecurity. Millions of people have been displaced, with 1.8 million seeking refuge in neighboring countries.
