- Course evaluation: Group Assignment (25%), Midterm (35%), Final Exam (40%)
Class Expectations
- Challenging course material
- Important to read the textbook and online readings for success
- Attendance is encouraged
- Use of resources: textbook, online, teachers, and classmates
Lecture Objectives
- Describe the importance of nursing research
- Discuss the role of evidence-based research in clinical nursing
- Describe the process for using evidence in practice and the nurse's role in the research process
- Describe priorities for nursing research
- Discuss facilitators and barriers to conducting and using nursing research
- Identify key components necessary for information retrieval
- Identify key databases available to access healthcare literature
Nursing Research Overview
- Definition: systematic process that helps nurses discover answers and resolve problems important to clinical practice, administration, or education
- Importance: increases nursing's science-based knowledge, improves patient outcomes, and increases credibility
- Accomplishments: increases credibility, improves outcomes, decreases costs, increases accountability, and provides a rationale for nursing care practices
Role of Nurses in Research
- Diploma prepared nurses: assist with data collection, use research findings for clinical care
- Baccalaureate Degree Nurses: identify clinical problems for research, understand research processes, apply research findings, collaborate on research teams
- Master's Degree Nurses: judge the relevance of research outcomes for clinical practice, serve as leaders in identifying clinical problems for study, collaborate with nurse scientists for research initiation
- Doctoral Degree (PhD) Nurses: identify significant research problems, develop programs for research, communicate research findings to the nursing community
College of Nurses (CNO) Standards
- Providing a theoretical and/or evidence-based rationale for all decisions
- Knowing where/how to access learning resources when necessary
- Seeking and reviewing research in nursing, health sciences, and related disciplines
- Using research to inform practice/professional service
History of Nursing Research
- Began in the 19th century with Florence Nightingale
- Focus on the importance of a healthy environment for patients
- Aspects of her research included ventilation, cleanliness, purity of water, and healthy diet
- Nursing research has evolved slowly over the years, with a current focus on clinical research
Priorities of Nursing Research
- Promote health
- Prevent disease
- Improve quality of life by managing symptoms of acute and chronic illness
- Enhance innovation in science and practice
- Eliminate disparities in access to care
Steps of Nursing Research
- Identify the problem
- Pick the study design
- Conduct the study
- Analyze the data
- Use the findings
Evidence-Based Practice (EBP)
- Importance: helps bridge the research-practice gap, improves patient outcomes, and reduces healthcare costs
- Definition: conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of theory-driven, research-based information in making decisions about care delivery
- Key components:
- Research evidence
- Clinical expertise
- Patient values and circumstances
EBP Process
- Assess practice (formulate question)
- Decide (evidence review)
- Plan (develop a plan based on findings)
- Intervene (take action to review process or change)
- Evaluate (care improved or modify and again intervene)
Conducting Effective Searches
- Components necessary for information retrieval: searching, databases, bibliographic databases, electronic databases
- Key databases: CINAHL, MEDLINE, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR), Database of Abstract of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE)
- Effective searching requires a well-built clinical question using the PICO model: population/patient/problem, intervention, comparison/control, outcome
