Normal Newborn Characteristics
- A newborn's weight is important for determining maturity and establishing a baseline for future growth.
- The normal weight range for a newborn is 2.5 kg (5.5 lbs) to 4.0 kg (8.75 lbs).
- Newborns typically lose 5% to 10% of their birth weight during the first few days after birth.
- This weight loss is due to factors such as the withdrawal of fluid-retaining maternal hormones, diuresis (increased urination), voiding and passing stool, limited intake (especially for breastfed babies), and ineffective sucking.
- Breastfed newborns regain their birth weight within 10 days, while formula-fed infants accomplish this within 7 days.
- Newborns gain about 2 lb per month for the first 6 months.
Newborn Length
- Length at birth is another important factor for determining a newborn's health.
- The normal range for birth length is 18 to 22 inches (46 to 54 cm).
Newborn Head Circumference
- Measured with a tape measure across the forehead and around the occiput.
- Normal range is 34 to 35 cm (13.5 to 14 in).
- Circumference less than 33 cm or more than 37 cm should be assessed for neurologic involvement.
Newborn Chest Circumference
- Measured at the level of the nipples.
- Typically about 3 cm less than head circumference.
Newborn Vital Signs
- Temperature: Near 99° F (37.2° C) at birth, falling to below normal due to immature temperature regulation.
- Pulse: 120 to 160 beats per minute.
- Respirations: 30 to 60 breaths per minute.
- Blood Pressure: 80/40 mmHg.
