Study Notes
Nonrenewable Resources
- Nonrenewable resources are natural resources that cannot be remade or regrown at a rate comparable to their consumption.
Examples of Nonrenewable Resources
- Nuclear Energy: Nuclear fission uses uranium to create energy. Once the uranium is used, it is gone, making nuclear energy a nonrenewable resource.
- Fossil Fuels: Coal, petroleum, and natural gas are considered nonrenewable because they cannot be replenished quickly. These are called fossil fuels.
Formation of Coal
- Coal is formed from dead plants that were buried under water and dirt millions of years ago.
- Heat and pressure transformed the dead plants into coal.
Formation of Oil and Natural Gas
- Oil and gas are formed from tiny sea plants and animals that died and were buried on the ocean floor, covered by layers of silt and sand.
- Over millions of years, the remains were buried deeper, creating immense heat and pressure, turning them into oil and gas.
Difference Between Coal and Oil/Gas
- Coal and oil/gas are both used for energy but are formed from different sources and under different conditions.
Renewable Resources
- Renewable resources are natural resources that can be replenished in a short period of time.
Examples of Renewable Resources
- Solar: Energy from the sun.
- Geothermal: Energy from Earth's heat.
- Wind: Energy from the wind.
- Biomass: Energy from burning organic or living matter.
- Water (Hydroelectric): Energy from the flow of water.
