Lecture 5 Reading

  • NIP (National Institute of Psychology): p.2, 3, 10, 14

Introduction to NIP Code

  • Why a Code of Ethics? To guide ethical decisions, reflect on professional ethics, avoid external pressure on professional autonomy, and set assessment standards when a client is involved.

  • NIP Code Revisions. The code is updated to reflect new legislation. It was first adopted in 1980 and has been revised several times. Differences between cultural understanding between the psychologist and the client may arise. Understanding NIP code is crucial.

  • Readability. Making the code readable and easy to understand by clients and other stakeholders.

  • Organized principles. The code is organized around four key principles: responsibility, integrity, respect, and expertise.

Sources

  • Universal Declaration, Meta Code, EFPA (European Federation of Psychologists' Associations), and human rights conventions

Preamble

  • Relationships. Relationships are inherently unequal, creating dependency, which can cause issues at different stages. This necessitates careful consideration of these dynamics.

  • Considerations. Seek support from a fellow psychologist if necessary, but only when there's a valid professional need and good reason. Avoid consultation for reasons that may be less justified or unimportant

Basic Principles

  • Responsibility (10): Psychologists should acknowledge their professional, scientific, and social responsibilities related to their work, clients, and wider society. They must also protect client conduct and avoid abuse of power.

  • Integrity (11): Honesty, fairness, and appropriate treatment of everyone in the context of a professional relationship. Be transparent about your role and the purpose of that professional relationship. This includes appropriate disclosure about the nature of the interaction and the expected level of confidentiality.

  • Respect (12): Respecting the rights and dignity of clients and colleagues. Considering the client's limitations and only providing services for which one is qualified. Not crossing boundaries or engaging in discriminatory practices. Maintain client privacy, unless there is a legitimate requirement to do so.

  • Expertise (18): Maintaining a high level of expertise and acknowledging limitations. Only providing services one is qualified for is also part of respecting the clients' best interest.
