Flashcards

Newton's Third Law of Motion

Newton's Third Law states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. This means that when one object exerts a force on another, that second object exerts an equal and opposite force back on the first. These forces always come in pairs, but act on different objects. They are always equal in magnitude and opposite in direction.

Pushing a book on a table

When you push a book on a table, the book pushes back on you with an equal force. This is because of the interaction between your hand and the book.

Swimming

When you swim, you push the water backwards. The water, in return, pushes you forward with an equal force, propelling you through the water.

How a rocket moves

A rocket moves forward because of the reaction force from the gases it expels out of its nozzle. This is because the rocket pushes the gases backwards, and the gases push the rocket forwards.

Action Reaction Pairs

Newton's Third Law states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. This means that when one object exerts a force on another, that second object exerts an equal and opposite force back on the first. These forces always come in pairs, but act on different objects. They are always equal in magnitude and opposite in direction.

Properties of Action-Reaction Forces

These forces come in pairs, are equal in magnitude, and act simultaneously on different objects.

Difference in action and reaction

The action and reaction forces can be physically different. For example, when a rocket pushes gases backwards, the gases push the rocket forwards. These forces are different in nature, but equal in magnitude.

Direction of action and reaction

Action and reaction forces are always in opposite directions. This means that if one force is pushing to the right, the other force is pushing to the left.

Action causes reaction

The reaction force is caused by the action force of one body on another. For example, when a hand pushes a book, the book pushes back on the hand.
