    Study Notes

    Neurocranium

    • Comprises the bones that enclose and protect the brain
    • Includes the calvarium (skullcap) and basis cranii (cranial base)

    Skull Bones

    • Os frontale (Frontal Bone):
      • Forms the forehead and part of the eye sockets (orbital parts)
      • Also includes the nasal part (forming part of the nose)
    • Ossa parietalia (Parietal Bones): (2)
      • Form the sides and top of the cranium
      • Connected to the frontal bone by the coronal suture (crown suture)
      • Connected to the occipital bone by the lambdoid suture
      • Connected to the temporal bones by the squamous sutures
      • Features include the following:
        • Superior and inferior temporal lines
        • Parietal tubercles
        • Parietal foramina
    • Os occipitale (Occipital Bone):
      • Forms the back and base of the skull
      • Contains the foramen magnum (large opening for the spinal cord)
      • Includes the pars squamosa, pars basilaris, partes laterales.
      • Features include the following:
        • External occipital protuberance
        • Superior and inferior nuchal lines
        • Foramen magnum (big hole)
    • Ossa temporalia (Temporal Bones): (2)
      • Lie below the parietal bones,
      • Contains structures related to the ear
      • Divided into parts:
        • Pars squamosa (squamous part): forms part of the temporal bone
        • Pars petrosa (petrous part): forms part of the cranial base
        • Pars mastoidea (mastoid part): filled with air spaces (mastoid cells)
        • Pars tympanica(tympanic part): forms part of the bony structure of the ear
        • Features include:
