Study Notes
Network Interface Cards (NICs)
- Physically connect host devices to network media
- Can be a printed circuit board or a peripheral device
- Identified by a unique Media Access Control (MAC) address
- MAC address is used to control data communication for the host on the network
Repeaters
- Regenerate analog or digital signals distorted by transmission loss due to attenuation
- Do not make intelligent decisions concerning forwarding packets
Hubs
- Concentrate on connections, allowing the network to see multiple hosts as a single unit
- Act passively, without affecting data transmission
- Active hubs also regenerate signals
Bridges
- Convert network data formats and perform basic data transmission management
- Provide connections between LANs
- Check data to determine if it should cross the bridge, making each part of the network more efficient
Switches
- Add intelligence to data transfer management
- Determine if data should remain on a LAN and only transfer data to the needed connection
- Do not convert data transmission formats
Routers
- Have all the capabilities of bridges, switches, and other network devices
