Study Notes
Nerve Supply
- Posterior belly of the digastric muscle is supplied by the facial nerve.
- Anterior belly of the digastric muscle is supplied by the nerve to the mylohyoid, which is a branch of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve.
Muscle Insertion
- The digastric muscle is quadrilateral and runs upward deep to the mylohyoid muscle.
- It enters the side of the tongue and ends when its fibers mix with those of other muscles of the tongue.
Relations of the Anterior Belly of the Digastric
- Medially: related to the hyoglossus and styloglossus nerves.
- Laterally: related to the mylohyoid muscle and the superficial part of the gland.
Relations of the Parotid Gland
- Medially: related to the nerves (including the hyoglossus and styloglossus).
- Laterally: related to the sublingual fossa of the medial surface of the mandible.
