Neoplasia Terminology and Characteristics
- Benign Tumors: Characterized by slow growth, lack of invasion, and well-defined borders. They do not spread to other parts of the body.
- Malignant Tumors: Invasive, grow rapidly, and can metastasize (spread) to other parts of the body.
Tumor Types (Benign)
- Glandular: Adenoma, cystadenoma
- Cartilage: Chondroma
- Smooth Muscle: Leiomyoma
- Fat Tissue: Lipoma
- Fibrous Tissue: Fibroma
- Mixed Tumor (with divergent differentiation): Pleomorphic adenoma
- Skin's Squamous Cells: Not a standalone benign type, but Squamous Cell Carcinoma is a malignant counterpart
- Melanocytes: Nevus (a benign tumor)
- Meninges: Meningioma
- Urinary Tract Epithelium: Urothelial papilloma
- Testicular Epithelium: Teratoma (can be benign, but also a component of other cancers)
- Breast: Fibroadenoma
- Kidney: Renal tubular adenoma
- Liver: Liver cell adenoma
Tumor Types (Malignant)
- Epithelial Origin: Carcinoma - Includes: Squamous cell carcinoma, Transitional cell carcinoma, Cholangiocarcinoma, Hepatocellular carcinoma
- Mesenchymal Origin: Sarcoma - Includes: Fibrosarcoma, Chondrosarcoma, Osteosarcoma, Liposarcoma, Leiomyosarcoma, Rhabdomyosarcoma, Angiosarcoma, Lymphangiosarcoma , Malignant Mixed tumor (salivary gland), Malignant cystosarcoma phyllodes
- Germ Cell: Seminoma, Embryonal carcinoma, Choriocarcinoma.
- Melanin-producing Cells: Melanoma
- Salivary Glands: Malignant Mixed tumor
- Kidney: Renal cell carcinoma, Wilms tumor.
Tumor Descriptions and Characteristics
- Papilloma: Benign tumor projecting over a mucosal surface.
- Polyp: Benign tumor projecting over a mucosal surface (similar to a papilloma).
- Cystadenoma: Benign, epithelial tumor forming a hollow cystic mass.
- Pleomorphic adenoma: Benign mixed tumor, with divergent differentiation of stem cells.
- Fibroadenoma: Benign tumor of the breast, with neoplastic fibrous component.
- Teratoma: Tumor composed of multiple germ cell layers.
- Hamartoma: Tumor composed of normal tissue in an abnormal location.
- Choristoma: Tumor composed of normal tissue in an abnormal location, but specifically a different location and type of tissue.
- Carcinosarcoma: Rare combination of malignant tumor of epithelium and mesenchyme.
- Collision tumor :two distinct cancers found in the same organ
