Study Notes
Neoplasia
- Abnormal mass formed from proliferating cells
- Cells have significant independence (autonomy)
- Formation of an abnormal mass of proliferating cells, possessing a significant degree of autonomy
Anaplasia
- Lack of cell differentiation in neoplasms
- Cells appear as a mass of primitive, varying-shaped (pleomorphic) cells
- Lack of differentiation in neoplastic cells; seen as a mass of pleomorphic primitive cells
Hyperplasia
- Cellular response to a stimulus
- Increased cell proliferation within an organ/tissue
- Can lead to organ enlargement or benign tumor formation
- Cell response to a specific stimulus, the proliferation of cells within an organ or tissue beyond normal; may result in the gross enlargement of an organ, the formation of a benign tumour.
Metaplasia
- One mature cell type transforms into another mature cell type
- One differentiated cell type changes into another mature differentiated cell type
Dysplasia
- Abnormal development
- Alterations in adult cell size, shape, and organization
- Abnormality of development, alteration in size, shape and organization of adult cells
