Head and Neck Assessment

  • Focuses on the cranium, face, thyroid gland, lymph nodes, eyes, ears, nose, and mouth

Skull Shape and Size

  • Varies by age, gender, and race
  • Abnormalities can be caused by congenital disorders, trauma, brain tumors, scalp swelling, hematoma, skin cancer, and hydrocephalus
  • Microcephaly: abnormally small head
  • Acromegaly: skull and facial bones are larger and thicker

Assessing the Head

  • Normal findings: round, normal size or head circumference, smooth skull contour, no lesions
  • Abnormalities: asymmetry, deformities, lacerations, signs of trauma

Assessing the Face

  • Normal findings: symmetric, normal range of motion, no swelling or nodules
  • Abnormalities: asymmetry, drooping, weakness, or paralysis on one side of the face
  • Temporal arteritis: inflammation of the temporal artery, may lead to blindness
