Study Notes
Natural Resources
- Natural resources are materials from nature used to make things we need, such as wind energy, water, plants, animals, and fossil fuels.
- Natural resources fall into two main categories: renewable and non-renewable.
Renewable Resources
- Renewable resources are those that can be replaced or never run out, such as:
- Solar energy: since the Earth was formed, the sun has produced energy in the form of heat and light, and is considered unlimited.
- Wind power: created as the sun heats the Earth's surface, and remains an infinite resource as long as the sun shines.
- Hydroelectric energy: generated from flowing water, which is constantly renewed by the water cycle, making it a renewable resource.
- Geothermal energy: using heat from the Earth's core, which is constantly warmed up, making it a renewable resource.
- Biomass: any material made by plants and animals that can be converted into energy, such as:
- Crops (e.g., corn or sugar cane) that can be converted into biofuels (e.g., ethanol) used in cars.
- Animal waste (e.g., cow manure) used as fertilizer.
Non-Renewable Resources
- Non-renewable resources are those that cannot be replaced at the same rate they are being used.
