10 Questions

What type of resource is groundwater if it is used up fast?

Exhaustible resource

What are the materials required by living beings to survive referred to as?

Natural resources

What is the main difference between renewable and non-renewable resources?

The time they take to form

Which of the following is an example of an inexhaustible resource?

Sunlight

Why can't non-renewable resources be replaced once they are used up?

Because they take millions of years to form

What is the characteristic of renewable resources?

They can be replaced in a short period of time

What happens to a renewable resource if it is used faster than it is renewed?

It becomes exhaustible

What is an example of an exhaustible resource?

Coal

Why can groundwater become an exhaustible resource?

Because it is disturbed in the water cycle

How long does it take to form fuels like coal and petroleum?

Millions of years

Study Notes

Natural Resources

  • All living beings require certain materials to survive, including air, water, and soil, which are referred to as resources of the earth.
  • Natural resources are materials that exist freely in nature, on the earth.

Types of Natural Resources

Renewable Resources

  • Renewable resources are those that are never depleted or lost, or can be replaced in a short period of time.
  • Examples of renewable resources include air, sunlight, and water.
  • However, some renewable resources may become exhaustible if they are used at a faster rate than they are renewed.
  • For example, groundwater can become an exhaustible resource if it is used up fast due to disturbance in the water cycle or a growing population.

Non-Renewable Resources

  • Non-renewable resources are those that once used up cannot be replaced in a short time.
  • They are also called exhaustible resources as their availability is limited.
  • Examples of non-renewable resources include fuels like coal, petroleum, and natural gas.
  • Once non-renewable resources are exhausted, they cannot be produced again as it takes millions of years to form these fuels.

Learn about the natural resources available on earth, such as air, water, and soil, and how humans utilize them in different ways to generate energy, obtain essential needs, and more. Test your knowledge of the importance of natural resources and their applications.
