Study Notes

Stance

  • A proper stance involves an open foot position and feet shoulder-width apart.

Nock Arrow

  • To nock an arrow, position it below the fletching and lift it over a vertical bow.

Drawing Hand Set

  • The drawing hand should hook the bowstring at the archer's groove for a secure grip.

Bow Hand Set

  • Center the bow's grip under the lifeline of the relaxed bow arm, ensuring the knuckles create a 30-45 degree angle.

Pre-Draw

  • Hinge both the bow arm and drawing arm up to eye level, rotating the bow arm elbow downward and away from the bowstring.

Draw

  • The draw should maintain the draw arm parallel to the ground while smoothly pulling the string towards the face.

Anchor

  • The anchor point is established by placing the index fingertip at the corner of the mouth for stability.

Aim

  • Aim by aligning the string and arrow point directly on the target to improve accuracy.

Shot Set-Up

  • Focus on maintaining active bow and drawing muscles while aiming. A slight rearward movement of the drawing elbow should begin using back muscles.

Release

  • The release of the shot occurs by relaxing the hooked fingers and the back of the drawing hand simultaneously, allowing for a smooth disengagement.

Follow Through / Reflect

  • After releasing, the drawing hand continues backward under the ear until the thumb approaches the shoulder. The drawing elbow should relax and hinge downward, while the bow arm slightly moves forward, left, and down for right-eye dominant archers (reverse for left-eye dominant). Reflect on whether the shot process felt and appeared correct.
