Study Notes
Nasal Polyps
- Nasal polyps are painless, benign growths in nasal passages and sinuses.
- They typically develop in adults (30s-40s).
- Common causes include asthma, allergic rhinitis, chronic rhinosinusitis, cystic fibrosis, and recurrent sinus infections.
- Polyps form due to chronic inflammation of mucous membranes, leading to swelling, redness, and fluid buildup.
- Possible inflammatory triggers include allergies and infections.
Nasal Polyp Symptoms
- Small polyps may not cause symptoms.
- Larger polyps can cause headaches, loss of smell/taste, nasal congestion, runny nose, nosebleeds, postnasal drip, facial pressure, or sinus pain.
Nasal Polyp Diagnosis
- Healthcare providers may ask about medical history, symptoms and duration.
- Examination of the nose using a nasal endoscope.
- Imaging, like CT scans, may be ordered for detailed sinus views.
Nasal Polyp Treatments
- Steroid sprays can shrink polyps and improve symptoms.
- Oral steroids and injections can also be used.
- Outpatient procedures like placing a stent or endoscopic surgery can remove polyps.
Nasal Turbinate Hypertrophy
- Nasal turbinates are narrow passages that warm and moisten air.
- Turbinate hypertrophy is an enlargement of these passages.
- Causes include chronic sinus inflammation, environmental irritants, allergies, and sinusitis.
- Enlarged turbinates can narrow nasal passages, causing breathing problems, frequent infections, and nosebleeds.
Turbinate Hypertrophy Symptoms
- Difficulty breathing through the nose.
- Altered sense of smell.
- Dry mouth upon waking (mouth breathing).
- Forehead pressure.
- Prolonged nasal congestion.
- Runny nose.
- Snoring.
Turbinate Hypertrophy Treatments
- Dust and pet dander reduction.
- Vacuuming, cleaning, and removing dust from furniture and fabrics.
- Placing fabric-covered items in the freezer for 24 hours.
- Using dust-proof mattress covers.
- Avoiding indoor smoking.
Nasal Obstruction or Congestion Causes
- Deviated septum
- Enlarged turbinates
- Nasal polyps
- Enlarged adenoids
- Nasal tumors (benign or cancerous)
- Nasal obstruction can also be caused by inflammation, anatomical blockages, and congestion in nasal tissue.
Nasal Obstruction or Congestion Symptoms
- Nasal obstruction is a significant contributor to snoring, impaired sleep, and sleep-disordered breathing.
- Nasal-based snoring is typically due to nasal stuffiness or small or collapsing nostrils.
Nasal Obstruction and Congestion Other Risks
- Fatigue.
- Reduced productivity.
- Increased risk of accidents.
- Mood alterations or depression.
- Negatively affected quality of life.
Nasal Obstruction and Congestion Treatment
- Treatments can ease nasal congestion, helping with breathing and everyday activities, and improving sleep quality.
- Determining the cause assists in choosing the best course of treatment, ranging from at-home solutions to in-office treatments, or surgical procedures.
