Purpose and Scope
- Establishes procedures for maintaining, transferring, and securing narcotics, Diphenhydramine, and anti-emetic medications at ALS apparatus stations.
- Applies to KCFD personnel responsible for supervision and handling of these medications.
Definitions
- Authorized Personnel: Includes Paramedic, Company Officer, EST Personnel, or Field DVC.
Storage and Responsibility
- Narcotics and medications are stored on ALS apparatus in sealed drug boxes.
- Each apparatus will contain two drug boxes under the primary custody of assigned paramedics.
- Control of drug boxes is maintained on the person or in the fixed vault on the apparatus.
Tagging System
- Drug boxes are sealed with security tags:
- Blue Tag: Denotes unopened, fully stocked drug box.
- Red Tag: Indicates used drug box that needs replacement.
Unopened Drug Boxes Management
- Drug boxes are packaged at the Medical Supply Division and secured with a Blue Tag.
- Custody transfers occur at shift change:
- Both off-going and on-coming paramedics confirm Blue Tag seals.
- They record relevant inventory on the Drug Box Log.
- Signatures are required to complete custody transfer.
Opened Narcotic Drug Boxes Procedures
- Upon opening, the appropriate KCFD personnel must notify the EST office.
- Replacement procedures follow:
- Inventory of open box with an assigned EMT and/or authority.
- Reseal with a Red Tag and record on the Drug Box Log.
- Custody of replacement box is transferred upon confirmation and signing.
Shift Change without Replacement
- If a drug box is open during shift change:
- The on-coming and off-going paramedics inventory together.
- The open box is resealed with a Red Tag and documented.
- If no relief is present, a company officer assists in inventory and documentation.
Emergency Access
- Resealed Red Tagged boxes may only be opened in extreme emergencies.
- Immediate notification to the Assistant Division Chief is required if both boxes are open or resealed.
