Study Notes
- Experiential Aspects in Teaching Music are examined
Lesson 1: Music and Children
- The objectives are to determine the three participant groups in music-making, ascertain music’s role in conveying emotions, and developing perception of music as art, language, and science.
- Music is an outlet to convey emotions and has always been a part of culture.
Mozart Effect
- In October 1993, researchers Dr. Gordon Shawn, Frances Rauscher, and Katherine Ky researched the effects of exposing college students to Mozart's piano music before a spatial reasoning test.
- Students who listened to Mozart's music had significantly higher test scores compared to those who did not.
- The research was popularized by the media as the “Mozart effect”.
- The main goal is to cultivate love/enjoyment for music in children and to teach them how to attain satisfaction as composers, interpreters, and listeners.
Three Groups of People Present in the Music Experience
- Composers allow children to contemplate and perceive the world, and let them examine both the common and the rare.
- Interpreters follow a performer's path.
- Listeners should not be passive, they evaluate, critique, and try to understand the message put forth by the composer and interpreter.
Benefits of Music in Child's Development
- Music enhances cognitive skills in reading and language development.
- Early musical training grows areas of the brain related to reading and language because music requires notation to read.
- Music helps children learn how to perform various skills such as listening, memorizing, or using imagination
- Music activates many areas of the brain simultaneously.
- Music improves mathematical and reasoning skills
- Music employs math extensively that can be realized by human senses.
- Music helps in creative thinking because some aspects of music are not absolute.
- Music helps improve motor skills and coordination.
Music: An Art, A Language, A Science
- Effective musicians must understand the nature of music.
- Music is compared to other fields, as it is an art, a language, and a science.
Music as an Art
- Elementary students should be guided on how to develop an aesthetic for music.
- Music experienced as art includes affinity for familiar music, emotional appeal of tunes, detachment from complex music, awareness in the use of form, recognition of accurate music with/without feelings, and it evokes imagination for an idea put across by the music.
Music as A Language
- Music is a universal language
- Music helps children use the language to communicate and for self-expression.
Music as a Science
- Music is an exact science.
- It is important that students familiarize themselves with the technical concepts as they progress in learning.
