Overview of the Muscular System
- The muscular system is a complex system of tissues that allow movement, maintain posture, and regulate body temperature.
- There are three main types of muscles: skeletal, smooth, and cardiac.
Skeletal Muscles
- Also known as striated muscles, they are voluntary muscles that are attached to bones.
- Functions:
- Movement of the body
- Maintenance of posture
- Support of joints
- Regulation of body temperature
- Characteristics:
- Striated (striped) appearance
- Multinucleated (many nuclei)
- Voluntary control (conscious control)
Smooth Muscles
- Also known as non-striated muscles, they are involuntary muscles that are found in the walls of hollow organs.
- Functions:
- Movement of substances through organs (e.g. digestion, peristalsis)
- Regulation of blood pressure
- Control of airway diameter
- Characteristics:
- Non-striated (smooth) appearance
- Single nucleus
- Involuntary control (autonomic nervous system)
Cardiac Muscles
- Found in the heart, they are responsible for pumping blood throughout the body.
- Functions:
- Pumping blood
- Maintaining blood pressure
- Characteristics:
- Striated (striped) appearance
- Single nucleus
- Involuntary control (autonomic nervous system)
Muscle Functions
- Movement: Muscles work together to move the body's skeleton.
- Stabilization: Muscles help maintain posture and stabilize joints.
- Regulation: Muscles help regulate body temperature, blood pressure, and other bodily functions.
Muscle Types
- Fast-twitch muscles: used for high-intensity, short-duration activities (e.g. sprinting)
- Slow-twitch muscles: used for low-intensity, long-duration activities (e.g. distance running)
- Intermediate muscles: used for moderate-intensity, moderate-duration activities (e.g. jogging)
Muscle Injuries and Disorders
- Muscle strains: tears in muscle fibers
- Muscle cramps: sudden, involuntary muscle contractions
- Muscular dystrophy: genetic disorders that cause muscle weakness and degeneration
- Myasthenia gravis: autoimmune disorder that causes muscle weakness and fatigue
