Muscles of the Mouth

Buccinator:
- Thin, flat muscle in the cheek.
- Compresses cheeks and expels air (e.g., whistling).
- Located between the upper and lower jaw.
Depressor Labii Inferioris:
- Also known as quadratus labii inferioris.
- Surrounds the lower lip and draws it to one side.
- Situated in the lower lip.
Levator Anguli Oris:
- Also referred to as caninus.
- Raises the angle of the mouth and draws it inward.
- Found in the upper lip.
Levator Labii Superioris:
- Known as quadratus labii superioris.
- Surrounds the upper lip, elevating it and dilating nostrils (indicates distaste).
- Located around the upper lip.
Mentalis:
- Muscle that elevates the lower lip and raises/wrinkles the chin skin.
- Positioned in the chin area.
Orbicularis Oris:

- Compresses, contracts, puckers, and wrinkles the lips (e.g., during kissing).
- Located around the mouth.
Risorius:
- Muscle that draws the corners of the mouth out and back (used when grinning).
- Located at the corners of the mouth.
Triangularis:
- Muscle that pulls down the corners of the mouth.
- Extends alongside the chin.
Zygomaticus Major/Minor:
- Major: Located at the outer cheek.
- Minor: Extends from the zygomatic bone to the angle of the mouth.
- Both muscles elevate the lip (e.g., during smiling or laughing).
