Muscle Types
- Muscles are categorized as voluntary or involuntary
- Voluntary muscles are controlled consciously, while involuntary muscles function automatically.
- Skeletal muscles are voluntary, controlled by the somatic nervous system. These muscles are found in the upper and lower limbs and head/neck.
- Cardiac muscles are involuntary and have a rectangular shape. Controlled by the autonomic nervous system.
- Smooth muscles are involuntary and have a bundle-like/tubular structure. Controlled by the autonomic nervous system, and can be found in internal organs like blood vessels, gastro-intestinal tract, and urinary bladder.
Muscle Parts
- Fibers are the fleshy parts of muscle responsible for contraction, they thicken upon contraction
- The origin is the fixed, proximal (closer to the body's midline) end of a muscle
- The insertion is the movable, distal (farther from the body's midline) end of a muscle
