To contain blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatics
Which type of muscle fibers are under the control of the will?
Striated muscle fibers
Where are all skeletal muscles attached in the body?
To the bones
Which part of the muscle is surrounded by endomysium?
Muscle bundles
What distinguishes skeletal muscle fibers from smooth muscle fibers?
Striated appearance
Which muscle fiber type is found in the upper third of the esophagus?

Study Notes
Muscle Tissue Characteristics
- Formed of a group of muscle fibers with contractility power due to contractile organoids (myofibrils) in their cytoplasm
- Cell membrane is called the sarcolemma
- Cytoplasm is called the sarcoplasm
Types of Muscle Fibers
- Skeletal muscle fibers
- Cardiac muscle fibers
- Smooth muscle fibers
Skeletal Muscle Fibers
- Characteristics: striated (show transverse dark and light bands) and voluntary (under control of will)
- Exceptions: upper third of esophagus, pharynx, and cremaster muscle are involuntary
- Do not branch, except in tongue and face
- Sites: all skeletal muscles attached to skeleton, eye, tongue, pharynx, and larynx
Structure of Skeletal Muscle Fibers
- Formed of cells (fibers) and connective tissue
- Connective tissue:
- Epimysium: dense connective tissue surrounding the whole muscle
- Perimysium: dense connective tissue dividing the muscle into bundles
- Endomysium: loose connective tissue separating the muscle fibers
- Function of connective tissue:
- Endomysium: contains blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatics
- Perimysium: provides attachment between muscle bundles
- Epimysium: provides attachment of muscle to tendon, ligament, perichondrium, and periosteum
Test your knowledge on the characteristics and types of muscle tissue, including muscle fibers, sarcolemma, sarcoplasm, striated/non-striated muscles, and voluntary/involuntary muscles. Explore different types of muscle fibers such as skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle fibers.
