Study Notes
Research Basics
- Research can be categorized into four types: Descriptive Research, Sample Survey, Fundamental Research, and Applied Research.
Research Process
- The research process involves Formulation of Hypothesis, which is followed by Collection of Data.
- Formulation of Hypothesis is preceded by Statement of Objectives.
- Research is conducted to Generate new knowledge, Obtain research degree, and Reinterpret existing knowledge.
Researcher Qualities
- The essential qualities of a researcher include spirit of free enquiry, reliance on observation and evidence, and systematization or theorizing of knowledge.
Hypothesis
- A hypothesis is a supposition.
Sampling Methods
- Area Sampling, Multi-stage Sampling, Sequential Sampling, and Quota Sampling are different types of sampling methods.
- Stratified random sampling is suitable for studying the prevalence of AIDS amongst male and female in India over different years.
- Cluster Sampling is appropriate for studying heterogeneous populations.
- Stratified Sampling is suitable when the population is heterogeneous.
Research Types
- Experimental Research involves controlling group conditions.
- Action Research is a type of research that applies laws to draw clear ideas about the problem.
- Applied Research aims to find solutions to practical problems.
Research Tools
- A questionnaire is a research tool.
Research Ethics
- A good research should ensure privacy and anonymity of the respondent.
- Research ethics include honesty, integrity, and confidentiality.
- Subjectivity is not a part of research ethics.
Statistics
- Normal Probability Curve should be zero skewed.
- t-test, ANOVA, and x2 are statistical tests used to test null hypotheses.
Research Methods
- Ex Post Facto research means researching after an incident has occurred.
- Field-work based research is classified as Empirical.
- Research papers can be based on both primary and secondary data.
Other Research Concepts
- A sociogram is a technique used to study human relations.
- Phenomenology is associated with qualitative research.
- Trial and Error is not a relevant phrase to describe the meaning of research as a process.
- Objectivity of research can be enhanced through its impartiality, reliability, and validity.
