Digital Literacy and Microsoft Word
- Digital literacy skills enable students to interact with and navigate the digital world using various software such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Prezi, and more.
- Microsoft Word is a word processor that comes in software suites or packages, providing support for text editing, formatting, and printing.
Accessing Microsoft Word
- To access Microsoft Word, click on the Windows icon and select Microsoft Word.
- To open an existing file, click on the required file shown on the left panel.
- To create a new document, click on the blank document.
Microsoft Word Interface
Home Tab
- The Home tab provides access to common tasks such as new, open, close, and save.
Quick Access Toolbar
- The Quick Access Toolbar provides quick access to most commonly used options such as save, undo, redo, and new file.
Ribbon Tabs
- Ribbon tabs comprise of 7 tabs: Home, Insert, Design, Layout, References, Mailings, Review, and View.
- Each tab has a specific group of related commands.
Taskbar
- The Taskbar shows the programs that are currently open on the computer.
- To switch from one program to another, single-click the program on the Taskbar.
Help Button
- The Help button or F1 key shows a new window with general help topics regarding Microsoft Word.
- Help is a good tool to learn about the features of the software.
Window Controls
- Minimize button hides the window in the Taskbar.
- Maximize button maximizes the window to full screen.
- Close button exits the software.
- Restore button returns the software window to a floating state.
Vertical Scroll Bar
- The Vertical Scroll Bar enables the user to scroll the content up or down.
Zoom Tool
- The Zoom Tool allows users to set the visual size of the text according to the ratio.
- 100% shows the actual size, which will be shown on printout.
View Buttons
- View buttons help in the selection of different view modes, such as Web, Read, or Print mode.
- This option can also be selected alternatively from the View tab.
Status Bar
- The Status Bar is located at the bottom of the software and displays document information, including:
- Number of pages
- Number of words
- Proofing errors
Text Area
- The Text Area is a large space below the ruler, also called the workspace or document pan.
- This is where text is typed, and images and tables can be inserted.
Vertical Ruler
- The Vertical Ruler is on the left-hand side of the screen, generally with measurement units in inches.
Cursor
- The Cursor is a blinking vertical line that shows where you can write.
Horizontal Ruler
- The Horizontal Ruler is at the top of the Text Area, with measurement units in inches.
Tab Selector
- The Tab Selector can be found in the corner between the Horizontal and Vertical Rulers.
- Clicking the Tab Selector shows all the tab stop types.
View Ruler Button
- The View Ruler Button hides and shows the ruler and can be accessed alternatively from the View tab.
