Motivational Interviewing
- Motivational interviewing is a guiding method designed to help patients with behavior change.
- It focuses on helping clients explore their own motivation and commitment to changing behaviors.
- It helps patients to move forward with their treatment plans by focusing on patient-centered care.
- It prioritizes the patient's readiness to change.
- It involves asking questions to engage the client.
- It helps patients to identify their own goals and explore their own motivations for change.
- It is based on the principle that people are more likely to make changes when they are motivated to do so.
- It uses a combination of active listening techniques to encourage the patient to explore their own feelings and thoughts about change.
Stages of Change
- There are three main stages of change:

Level 1: Not Motivated, and Not Ready.
- This is when the client is not yet aware of the need to change and/or is not ready to make changes.
- The goal for this stage is to raise doubt.
- Key techniques for this stage include raising awareness, personalizing benefits, promoting change talk, respecting the client's decision, summarizing, and offering professional advice.

Level 2: Unsure, Low Confidence.
- This is when the client is aware of the need to change but is unsure about how to do so or lacks confidence in their ability to make changes.
- The goal for this stage is to build confidence.
- Key techniques for this stage include exploring ambivalence, exploring barriers, imagining the future, exploring successes, encouraging support, summarizing, and asking about the next step.

Level 3: Motivated, Confident, and Ready
- This is when the client is motivated to change, confident in their ability to make changes, and ready to take action.
- The goal for this stage is to develop an action plan.
- Key techniques for this stage include praising positive behaviors, identifying options, negotiating realistic short-term goals, and developing an action plan.

Essential Techniques
- A = Affirmations: Recognizing the client's strengths, acknowledging efforts towards change.
- R = Reflective Listening: Reflecting back what you heard, interpreting the heart of the client's message, encouraging them to keep talking.
- S = Summaries: Summarizing the session, periodically throughout the session, helps organize thoughts, strengthens change talk, clarifies discrepancies.
