Mosques in Aleppo
- Built by Umayyad Caliph Suleyman in 717 CE, the Great Mosque of Aleppo is an architectural masterpiece.
- It shares similarities with the Umayyad Great Mosque of Damascus, including the plan and architectural style.
- Also contains religious significance, including the remains of Prophet Zakariyah.
- Connected to historical figures like Emir Nur al-Din Zanki.
- The mosque was built in 715CE, after the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, and was intended to be of equal quality.
- It was originally a Roman and Byzantine Friday mosque.
- The mosque had many adaptations due to fires and earthquakes, which altered architectural additions over time.
- Abbasids, blinded by vengeance, vandalized the mosque, removing mosaics and carvings which transferred to Al-Anbar in Iraq.
- Byzantine emperor Nicephorus's occupation in 962 CE caused significant burning and destruction.
- The Hamdanids restored the mosque, marking it as an influential period.
- Seljuks added the current minaret in 1090CE.
- Crusades resulted in further damage to the mosque.
Architecture of the Mosque
- The original Umayyad structure was destroyed, but the mosque is still a significant architectural masterpiece of the Muslim world.
- The mosque plan dates from Nur al-Din's 1158 reconstruction.
- It is a rectangle, approximately 150m x 100m, with a courtyard in the center.
- It has gates on each side, with one southern gate directly connecting to the prayer hall.
- The prayer hall has an arcaded room with three aisles and piers, running parallel to the qibla wall, which is raised by 80 strong piers.
- An original central dome over the mihrab was later replaced by Qalawun's renovation.
- The mihrab is made of yellow stone, with a historical connection to the remains of Prophet Zakariyah.
- Mameluke restoration added elements, such as a cross-vaulted system.
- The courtyard serves as a social space, similar to domestic buildings.
- The minaret dates back to 1090 CE, built by Hasan ibn Mufarraj in response to the destruction of prior structures.
- The minaret is 45 meters high, with six sections and 174 steps.
