Monsoon Breaks and Rainfall

The monsoon has wet and dry spells, with rainfall occurring only for a few days at a time and interspersed with rainless intervals. These breaks in monsoon are related to the movement of the monsoon trough. When the trough's axis lies over the plains, there is good rainfall in these parts. However, when the axis shifts closer to the Himalayas, dry spells occur in the plains, leading to widespread rain in the mountainous catchment areas. Heavy rains in the Himalayan regions can cause devastating floods in the plains.
